What it is

CV Builder is a resume editor that runs entirely in your browser. You fill in a form on the left, see a live preview on the right, pick a template, and download a PDF or save a backup file. Edits auto-save on this device, with undo and redo for mistakes. No sign-in, and nothing is stored on our servers.

Your resumes are saved on this device. Move them between computers by exporting a backup on one and importing on the other.

New to CV Builder? Take a quick guided tour of the builder — your CVs, the editor, optional AI help, and PDF export. It runs automatically the first time you visit. Replay anytime from here or About in the toolbar.

  2. CV library — switch resumes, add new ones, and use Import or Export.

Back up and restore

Back up your resume or move it between devices
Import resume modal with Paste backup tab selected
Use Import / Export in the CV library sidebar (Edit mode) to back up one resume or all your CVs in one file.
  1. In Edit mode, open the CV library sidebar and click Export. Select one or more CVs, then download the backup file (one CV = single file; several = one file with all of them).
  2. On another device (or after clearing browser data), open CV Builder and click Import in the CV library sidebar.
  3. Stay on Paste backup, paste the file contents, and click Import — or use Choose file to pick one or more backup files (.json) from disk.
  4. Your resume(s) load and auto-save on this device. Use PDF for job applications; the backup file is for transfer only.

AI Assistant

Refine wording, bullets, or structure with an AI chat

The AI Assistant copies ready-made editing instructions for you to paste into an AI chat.
  1. Click AI Assistant in the toolbar. Choose a task and add optional instructions.
  2. Pick a provider (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Grok). The instructions are copied and a new chat opens.
  3. Paste the instructions in the AI chat (⌘V / Ctrl+V) and send.
  4. Copy the reply the AI returns.
  5. Click Import → Paste backup → Import.

  4. Copy the reply the AI returns.
  5. Switch to Paste backup in the Import modal and click Import.

Download PDF

Print or save a print-ready file for applications

Switch to Preview, pick a template, then use Download PDF.
  1. Click the Preview tab to see your resume as it will print.
  2. Use the template button in the preview bar to choose a layout (Classic, Modern, Corporate Band, and more).
  3. Click Download PDF in the toolbar.
  4. Your browser opens the print dialog. Choose Save as PDF (or your system’s equivalent) to download a print-ready file.

Install for offline use

Open About in the builder toolbar for platform-specific install steps.
  1. Visit CV Builder at least once while online so the app can save files for offline use.
  2. In the builder toolbar, click the About info icon to open the About modal.
  3. Expand Install app for offline use for steps tailored to your browser and device (Chrome install prompt, Safari Add to Home Screen, etc.).
  4. After installing, the editor works offline. Your resume data stays on this device — no online sync required.

Frequently asked questions

Is CV Builder free?

Yes. There is no subscription, no paywall, and no account to create. Open the builder and start editing.

Where is my resume stored?

On this device, in your browser. CV Builder never uploads your content to a server.

What is a resume backup file?

A portable save file of your resume that you can download and open again later. You do not need to understand the file format to use CV Builder: fill in the form as usual, and the app handles the rest.

Use Export when you want a backup on disk or to open the same resume on another device; use Import to load that file back in. For job applications, use PDF — the backup file is only for transfer. The file ends in .json, which is normal for this kind of save file.

Can I use it on more than one device?

Export a backup from one device and import it on another. That is the only way to move resumes between machines — there is no online sync.

Can I undo changes?

Yes. Use ⌘Z / Ctrl+Z to undo and ⌘⇧Z / Ctrl+Y to redo. The editor keeps up to 50 recent edits as you work.

How does the AI Assistant work?

It copies editing instructions and opens an AI chat (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Grok). Nothing is sent until you paste the instructions there yourself. You copy the reply back and import it with Import → Paste backup.

What is Convert with AI?

An import option that copies step-by-step instructions and an example layout — not your resume text — to an AI chat. You paste your source resume in that chat, then import the reply the AI returns.

Can I work offline?

After your first visit, install the app (Add to Home Screen or Install app in your browser). The editor then works offline; your resume data is already saved on this device.

What happens if I clear browser data?

Resumes saved on this device are removed with your browser data. Export a backup periodically if you want a file copy on disk.

How do I get a PDF?

Use Download PDF in the toolbar. It opens your browser’s print dialog — choose Save as PDF (or your system’s equivalent) to download a print-ready file.

  2. Preview to browse templates and check layout before you print.
  3. Download PDF for applications, or Export a backup file. Import that backup on another device to pick up where you left off.
